What is the difference between density and unit weight?

Density (ρ) is mass per unit volume (kg/m³). Unit weight (γ) is weight per unit volume (kN/m³). They are related by γ = ρ × g where g = 9.81 m/s².

What is the density of structural steel?

Structural steel has a density of approximately 7,850 kg/m³. This is equivalent to 78.5 kN/m³ in unit weight terms, or 490 lb/ft³ in imperial units.

How much does 1 m³ of concrete weigh?

Normal weight concrete weighs approximately 2,400 kg/m³ (23.5 kN/m³). Lightweight concrete is about 1,800 kg/m³, and heavyweight concrete can reach 2,600 kg/m³.

What is the density of water in kg/m³?

Fresh water has a density of 1,000 kg/m³ at 4°C. Sea water is slightly denser at approximately 1,025 kg/m³. This is why ships float higher in sea water.
