Air Entrainment

The intentional incorporation of microscopic air bubbles in concrete through admixtures to improve freeze-thaw durability and reduce bleeding during placement.

Air Vessel

Allowable Bearing Capacity

Alternate Depth

Anchor Bolt

A steel bolt embedded in concrete used to connect structural or equipment elements to the foundation.

Aquifer

A saturated geological formation that can store and transmit significant quantities of groundwater.

Arbitration

Asphalt

Braced Cut

Bulk Density

The mass per unit volume of a material including the voids, expressed in kg/m³ or lb/ft³.

Camber

Cantilever

Cavitation

Center of Gravity

Centroid

The geometric centre of a cross-section or area, the point about which the first moment of area is zero, used in calculating bending and axial stresses.

Change Order

A written amendment to a construction contract authorising a change in scope, schedule, or cost after the original agreement has been executed.

Change Point

A point in levelling where the instrument is repositioned while the staff remains stationary, serving as a transfer point for continuous elevation readings.

Chord Member

A primary longitudinal member in a truss, either top or bottom, that resists axial compression or tension and defines the overall geometry of the truss.

Chute Spillway

Claim

Clothoid

Coefficient of Curvature

Cofferdam

Collimation Error

The error in levelling caused by the line of sight of the telescope not being exactly horizontal when the instrument is levelled.

Compaction

Composite Action

Compression Ratio

Conjugate Depth

Consolidation

The gradual process of volume reduction in saturated clay soils under sustained loading, driven by the expulsion of pore water.

Consolidation Coefficient

A soil parameter, denoted Cᵥ, that describes the rate at which consolidation occurs under an applied load, used in settlement-time predictions.

Contract Documents

Corrosion Inhibitor

A chemical admixture that reduces the rate of corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete by forming a protective film on the metal surface.

Couple

A pair of equal, parallel, and opposite forces separated by a perpendicular distance, producing pure rotation without translation.

Creep

The time-dependent deformation of soil under constant effective stress, occurring over long periods after primary consolidation is complete.

Crest

The topmost point of a dam, spillway, wave, or embankment; in hydraulics, the highest point of flow over a weir.

Critical Depth

Critical Gap

Critical Height

Crossfall

Culvert

Curing

Decision Sight Distance

Deflection

Degree of Indeterminacy

The number of excess unknown reactions or internal forces beyond the available equilibrium equations in a structure, indicating the level of statical indeterminacy.

Density

The number of vehicles occupying a given length of roadway at an instant, expressed in vehicles per kilometre per lane.

Dewatering

The removal of groundwater or surface water from a construction site by pumping, wellpoints, or drainage to create a dry working area.

Diaphragm Action

The in-plane structural behaviour of a floor slab, roof deck, or shear panel that distributes lateral forces from wind or earthquakes to vertical resisting elements.

Dispute Resolution

The formal process of settling disagreements between contracting parties, including negotiation, mediation, adjudication, and arbitration.

Diverging

The traffic operation where a single stream of vehicles splits into two or more separate streams, typically at exit ramps or lane drops.

Drawdown

The reduction in the piezometric head or water table elevation due to pumping from a well or dewatering system.

Drop Structure

A hydraulic structure that lowers the channel bed elevation over a short distance to control flow energy and prevent downstream erosion.

Gap Acceptance

Girt

Grade Beam

A reinforced concrete beam at or below grade that connects pile caps or footings, distributing loads and resisting differential settlement.

Grain Size Distribution

The percentage of soil particles by mass passing through a series of standard sieves, graphically represented as a particle size distribution curve.

Grout

A fluid mixture of cement, sand, and water used to fill gaps, bond reinforcement, or stabilise soils and rock.

Gusset Plate

A steel plate used at the joint of two or more truss members to transfer forces through bolted or welded connections.

Haunch

A deepened section of a beam or slab near its support where bending moments are highest, providing additional depth and moment capacity.

Headway

The time or distance between successive vehicles in a traffic stream, typically measured from front axle to front axle in seconds.

Heave

Height of Instrument

Specification

Stadia

A surveying method that uses the stadia hairs in a telescope reticle to measure distance by reading the intercept on a levelling staff.

Statics

The branch of mechanics that analyses bodies at rest under the action of forces, dealing with equilibrium conditions and internal force distribution.

Stiffener

A structural plate or section attached to a beam or plate web to prevent local buckling and increase shear capacity.

Stilling Basin

A hydraulic structure downstream of a spillway or outlet that dissipates flow energy through a hydraulic jump, preventing scour of the natural channel.

Stirrup
