What is the difference between singly and doubly reinforced beams?

Singly reinforced beams have steel only in the tension zone. Doubly reinforced beams have steel in both tension and compression zones, needed when the design moment exceeds the limiting moment capacity of the section.

What is effective depth?

Effective depth (d) is the distance from the extreme compression fiber to the centroid of tension reinforcement. It is typically the overall depth minus cover and half the bar diameter.

What is the minimum reinforcement ratio?

Minimum Ast = 0.85bd/fy (ACI) or 0.12% of gross area (IS 456). This ensures the beam does not fail suddenly when cracking occurs.
